Casting

A Cast is made when material is poured into a mold and hardens to result in a desired solidified shape.
To perform a Cast in Steelhead to document a cast in your job shop, you must set up a few things first.
The features described below all work together in Steelhead:

Inventory Items used for Casting
An Inventory Item used for casting is the input material of a cast, which is commonly liquid metal.
To create one:
- Open/Create an Inventory Type and Inventory Item.
- Set a Material.
- Set Provided Operation: CAST
- Fill out any other optional details and save.
Materials
Materials are used to specify the raw substances or components of a Part Number or Inventory Item. Once you have the appropriate substrate in your system as Inventory, then:
- Navigate to the "All Materials" page of the Casting Dashboard. Click on "+NEW MATERIAL".
- Enter Substrate.
- Alloy and Temper are optional
- Source Material is optional and used for specifying the alloy
- Type the name of an object to create new
Materials can also be created directly from the Part Number or Inventory Item Material selector. Material must be set to perform casts successfully.
Part Numbers that Result from a Cast
When a cast is complete, a new Part Number will result. It is commonly a solidified version of the Inventory Item that it originated from.
To create a Part Number that results from a cast:
- Create/Open a Part Number.
- Select Source Operation: CAST
- Set Material (that matches the material of the inventory item used to make the cast).
- Fill out any other optional details and save.
Casting Dashboard
If your Steelhead subscription includes the Casting feature, the the Casting tile will be available on your Steelhead Homepage. Clicking on this tile will open the Casting Dashboard.
Parts to be Cast Section of Casting Dashboard
The "Parts to be Cast" section of the Casting Dashboard displays all output cast Part Numbers needed for open Sales Orders, as well as all relative information about the Part Numbers.
From this section, you may cast parts or create a cast plan. To do this, select part(s) listed in the table (optional) and click the "Cast Parts" or "Cast Plan" button.
In order for a Part Number to display in this section, the following are required:
- Part Number with Source Operation: CAST is a Sales Order part
OR - Part Number with Source Operation: CAST is a component of an assembly on the Sales Order
From this section, you can also filter the listed results by Material, Part Number, Inventory Item, Customer, and Sales Order. The filter button is located to the right of the section title.
Cast Work Orders Section of Casting Dashboard
The "Cast Work Orders" section of the Casting Dashboard lists all of the active Work Orders on the "Casting" process.
From this section, you may complete cast plans. Do so by opening the Work Order and completing the cast there, or clicking the "Cast" button found on the dashboard.
The Cast Work Orders list also includes a "Completed" status bar, due dates, the option to edit cast plans, and a link to associated Part Numbers.
From this section, you can also filter the listed results by Part Number, Inventory Item, Customer, and Sales Order. The filter button is located to the right of the section title.
Completed Casts Section of Casting Dashboard
The "Completed Casts" section of the Casting Dashboard is a limited list of the most recent casts that were created.
Here, you can view the cast number, completed at date, user that made the cast, associated inventory item, and associated Part Number(s). The cast number is linked to more information about the particular cast.
If the cast you are trying to view is not listed in this table, or you would like to see all casts ever made, click the "View All Completed Casts" button that is located to the right of the section title.
How to Cast Parts
There are many places in Steelhead that parts can be cast. Some places include, the Casting Dashboard, Casting Work Orders, Casting Workboard Card, etc.
To cast parts:
- Open the "Create Cast" dialog.
- Set an inventory item and quantity being cast.
- Select or create a batch for the inventory item
- Ability to adjust depletion units
- Ability to edit inventory item
- Set the part number(s) and quantity that result from the cast.
- Ability to name the batch and add a description
- Ability to select (and scan) an initial location
- Ability to assign part group(s) or serialize
- Delete Part Number rows
- Copy and edit Part Numbers
- Upload files
- Select a station where cast is performed
- Select equipment used
5. In the "Completed Casts" section is where all saved casts are found.
Cast Plan
A Cast Plan is a cast or multiple that is planned to be completed.
To create a cast plan:
- Open the "Create Cast Plan" dialog.
- Select the inventory item (material) and quantity to be cast.
- Select or create a batch.
- Ability to edit the inventory item
- Select the Part Number(s) and quantity that will result in the cast.
- Enter any additional details for the cast.
- Equipment to be used
- Station where the cast is to be performed
- Cast Deadline
- Attach files
- Remove Part Numbers
- Add additional Part Numbers
- Add additional casts
- Edit Part Numbers
- Delete and copy row
- Remove equipment
- Fill out WO Custom Inputs
- In the "Cast Work Orders" section are all active cast plans.
Casting Workboard Card
When the first cast plan is created, a Casting process will automatically be created. With this process, you can create a Workboard with a Casting Workboard Card on it. This is similar to the "Cast Work Orders" section of the Casting Dashboard.
To set up a Casting Workboard Card:
- Go to the Workboards tile.
- Create a new Workboard.
- Inside of the Workboard, add a new card.
- Select the "Casting" process and process node.
Save the Workboard Card.
Casting Work Orders will appear on this Workboard Card.
From this card, you can view cast details, edit the cast plan, and cast parts.
